High Velocity is Nothing New, But Is It Good?

Most of the ideas about how to live life and how to work well are ancient ideas.  We see frequent changes in science and technology, but whether these technological changes are good and useful can be answered by ancient men and women.

The call to be a High Velocity Organization is not a new idea.  It is an old idea that we are now prepared to wrestle with as a company.

Aristotle in his "Metaphysics" creates the word, energaea, sometimes spelled energeia.  He defines energaea as action and at other times he uses it as actuality.  Aristotle tells us that potentiality has no value until the potential  we have, is used.   We cannot reach our full potential as human beings without action.  Think about it like a battery.  A battery is not useful until the energy it stores is utilized.

We could use the word energaea interchangeably with our 2018 directive: to became an Energaea Organization, an Organization of Action.

So the ancients can answer questions such as:  Is it good to be an HVO? Is there value in hard work, action, accountability and production?

Cicero states in 100 B.C., "For it is commonly said: accomplished labors are pleasant."  Horace is 65 B.C. writes, "Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work." And Julius Caesar said, "Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible." Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century wrote in his "Summa Theologica", "To live well is to work well, to show a good activity."

The ancients tell us our call to labor, action and production is of great value to us and the world.

Even in modernity we are encouraged to function at high velocity.  Marie Curie was the only person to win the Nobel Prize in multiple fields, she writes,  “We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.”

Albert Einstein wrote to his son, "Work is the only thing that gives substance to life."

Business magnate, Elon Musk said, "You either move very quickly and you work hard to improve your product technology, or you get destroyed by some other company."

From long ago to today, intelligent women and men have made it clear that life and work in a high velocity approach is the best approach.  As we begin to initiate this philosophy and bring about change we can confidently know this is the right path.
